Maydum Pyramid

Dahshur

King Snofru did not just rely on his Maydum Pyramid, as he then built the Bent Pyramid at Dahshur • [map] further north. The reason for the alteration of the slope halfway up is unknown, but his engineers might have calculated that it would be too tall and liable to collapse, or it could have been finished in haste. For whatever reasons, Snofru embarked on a third and final one, known as the Red Pyramid (daily 8am–5pm; charge), which was the first ‘true’ pyramid. Built with much shallower angles, it is a graceful construction, containing a single burial chamber above ground.
